This week Apple revealed that they would release parts, tools, and manuals for Apple devices in the future for repairs. They will call this Apple’s self-service improvement program, and it will begin with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. This step appears to change the way Apple approaches the handling of device hardware and repairs, far from the improvement that must be done by “authority” to do so , which allows consumers to take their fate into their own hands.
Independent service improvements with Apple will enable customers to “join more than 5,000 Apple’s official service providers (AASPS) and 2,800 independent repair providers” when launched in early 2022. Consumers will join AASPS and IRP with official access to the Apple section, tools, and manual.
Apple Mandiri Service Improvement Program will work with parts, tools, and manuals for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at the beginning of 2022. Apple suggests that they will switch to a Mac computer with the M1 chip, then another device. The first phase of the program will focus on the iPhone 12 and 13 screen, camera, and battery replacement and repair.
The launch of this program will include an online store Apple Self Repair Online. When launched, this new store will include “more than 200 individual parts and tools” for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. It will be interesting to see how the opening of this store will affect sales of 3rd parts.
Individuals will be encouraged to review the repair manual before visiting the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store. After making an order and repairing their own device, users will be encouraged to send parts or parts of the mark back to Apple to be recycled, at which point they will “receive credit for their purchase.”
